Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,
for He who promised is faithful.
Hebrews 10:23 (NKJV)
Have you ever wondered when your situation will turn for the better? Family issues, financial hardships, and health concerns. The list is endless. You wonder... when will my breakthrough come? You pray and believe and continue walking in faith, but sometimes you long for a sign that your promise of peace and provision will come to fruition. I believe that it is coming, but not all at once. Little by little, we will reach the end of our tunnel. We will reap a wonderful blessing and will be changed for the better.
Think of it this way, you wake up in the middle of the night needing a glass of water. The hallway to the kitchen is dark, but you continue slowly down the hallway because the night lights are shedding light and pointing the way. Have you ever considered that God does that same thing for us in our darkest situations? Have you ever noticed the night lights that He puts out for us to find our way in the dark? The flickering lights that bring moments of relief and blessing. I have decided to call them glimpses of His promises. These glimpses have encouraged me to continue my journey. I understand that things may get worse before they get better, but each time I see the flickering light, my hope is revived, and my faith restored. I believe that He will do just what He says, and He will bring it to pass.
A few months ago, I was resolved that I would not ever be able to pursue a career in my field again because I am older now. Trying to compete with much younger candidates had become frustrating and disappointing. There seemed to be no one who would take a chance on me. I had prayed and prayed and sought God for an opportunity. I finally decided to leave it in His hands and wait for Him to bring the opportunity to me.
One day, I felt He was saying to me that I needed to trust Him fully and completely. Proverbs 3:5-6 says that we should not lean to our own understanding (or way of doing things), but we should acknowledge Him (seek Him, consult Him) in all that we do, and He will tell us which way to go and what to do. So, I took a leap of faith and resigned from my job without having another one lined up. When my husband was living, I could fall back on his income, but this time, there was no one except God to fall back on. Making the decision to trust God completely brought me inexplicable peace. The weight was immediately lifted from my heart and mind. I was walking in absolute faith that God was going to provide for me and my family no matter what. Even now, I am convinced that He was waiting for me to trust Him because the next morning, I received a call from a recruiter for a job placement. From the description, she gave me, it was the type of job I had been wanting. I had one interview and was told it would be a few days before I would hear from them. Later that same day, the recruiter called and said that they wanted a second interview. I expected to wait several days again, but it only took a day. This time, the recruiter called and had an offer for me. This all happened in less than two weeks after I resigned. I accepted the offer with gratefulness. To me, this was a glimpse of His promise of provision for me while fulfilling a desire of my heart. I had tried over and over to secure employment, but with no success. When I surrendered my plan to God, He made everything fall into place.
There are many other times that He offers us glimpses of His promises, but we must adjust our eyes in our darkness to see His light shining on our path. We must intently look for the light so that we are not consumed by the darkness that tries to overcome us.
When a difficult co-worker shows us kindness with a simple ‘please’ - that is a glimpse of His promise to shield us from evil.
When the repairman goes out of his way to fix an appliance but doesn’t charge the full price - that is a glimpse of His promise to provide our every need.
When your child calls you just to tell you how grateful they are that you made a way for them - that is a glimpse of His promise that He is working in their lives.
When you expected your day to be completely taxing and draining yet you leave the office with energy and accomplishment – that is a glimpse of His promise for strength in our weakness.
If we really took the time to think about it, we could see glimpses of His goodness all around us. Little flickering lights that are meant to remind us that He sees us making our way in the darkness. No matter how long our darkness endures, we will eventually make it to the end if we continue walking by the light. We should be reminded that God is not only thinking of the "promise", but He is also thinking of our transformation as we continue our path. The glimpses of our future promise should encourage us to keep moving forward and remind us that He is with us, He sees us, and He knows just what we need to bring us to our expected end. (ref. Jeremiah 29:11 KJV)
The Prayer
Father, I ask that you give us the focus to see the flickering lights that reveal your promises to us. Touch the eyes of our hearts so that we may see clearly in the darkness and not depend on our natural sight. Help us Holy Spirit to stay on the pathway that is lit with your promises and guide us to our expected end. In Jesus Name, Amen.
